  • Systems level: Design of vocational education and training (VET) systems

Research at the chair of Business Education and Human Resource Development

The field of Business Education is part of research in vocational education and training. According to the senate commission on vocational education and training research (established by the German Research Foundation) the research in this field focuses on the conditions, the processes and the outcomes of gaining professional qualifications as well as on reviewing the personal and social attitudes and orientations of individuals which may be significant for the execution of professional organized processes of work (DFG 1990, S. 1). The main interests of research at the chair of Business Education and Human Resource Development are the following:

  • “Learning for and in Business Educational Settings & Human Resource Management”
  • “Educational Management”
  • “Design of VET-systems”

Research in the field of “Learning for and in Business Educational Settings” aims at the investigation of learning processes of individuals as well as the teaching process itself, among others from a pedagogical psychological perspective. Commercial administrative activities are the main focus of research here, additionally emphasizing the examination of interdisciplinary competences like learning competence, method competence as well as sustainability. Research therefore is tracking the following questions:

  • How to create application orientated strategies for the use of ethnical and cultural differences in the classroom, with special regards to diversity management as well as the implementation of classroom management?
  • How to create business-process orientated teaching and learning processes, with special regards to ERP systems?
  • How to effectively use information technology in the context of teaching and learning (E-Learning), focusing on self-regulating learning processes and induced effects on an institutional level, such as change management?
  • How to create a reasonable framework for professional actions in vocational-instructional settings with special regards to social networks, social capital and stress?
Human Resource Development itself can be defined as a support process. The quality of this process is determined by how much influence the human resource management development exerts on the core processes. Research in this field is therefore tracking the following questions:
  • How to design human resource development as part of human resource management in business companies?
  • How to support the development of pedagogical professionals, with special regards to output control through education competency standards, the pedagogical self-concept of professionals and conceptual change?
  • How to establish human resource management in schools, focusing on pedagogical leadership?

Research in the field of “Educational Management” aims at the investigation of the organization of institutions engaged in pedagogical processes (on an institutional level). The main objects of research here are vocational schools, universities and academies, approaching them from a business administration point of view as well as from a business management point of view.
Research therefore is tracking the following questions:

  • How to support the development of pedagogical institutions, with special regards to school management, school development and change management (“intra-institutional development”)? The focus here is the question of new patterns of leadership and quality management in vocational schools and universities, such as internal and external evaluation.
  • How to establish institutional networks, with special regards to regional education networks and possible cooperation between companies and vocational schools (”inter-institutional development”)?

Research in the field of “Design of vocational education and training (VET) systems” aims at the investigation of the effects on vocational education (as a system) in the course of the Copenhagen Process.
